Torbio:

Accoyo Torbio is one of the original 15 Suri males brought to the United States directly from the Accoyo ranch. As we look to celebrating his 17th birthday in January of 2008, we are continually amazed at his vigor and the quality of fiber still growing on this old guy. He has certainly made his mark on our farm and the American alpaca industry. He has sired over 200 cria and his track record speaks for itself. His offspring are constant high sellers at auction and his genetics are some of the most sought after in the country. With more than 100 championships to their credit, his offspring have been dominating the show ring for more than a decade. In a true testament to his genetics, his offspring such as Accoyo Masterpiece and Accoyo Rockstar have continued to improve the lines. Even grand offspring carry through the genetics with such herdsires as Bellmonte producing show winning cria. Torbio is truly a foundation herdsire for the entire North American suri herd.

Accoyo: Setting the Standard

What is an Accoyo? The Accoyo alpacas are some of the top alpacas in this country today. There are Accoyo suris and huacayas. Most are white and there are a very few fawn Accoyo alpacas. These alpacas have great fiber coverage, great lock structure and great crimp and density. Each shearing, the Accoyos yield the most pounds of fiber. The word Accoyo means “sandy ground”. The most important alpaca rancher in Peru is named Don Julio Barreda and his alpaca ranch is called ACCOYO. His ranch is located near the village of Macusani, which is 15,000 feet above sea level and rather difficult to get to. The Barreda family has raised alpacas for many years. One of the first ranchers to put up fences and take a controlled approach, in the mid 1900’s Don Julio started to selectively breed his herd. He started crossing specific alpacas together to improve the line. After many years of breeding and selection Don Julio has developed an incredible herd of quality alpacas. Some of these high quality alpacas were imported into the United States. Many breeders have bred solid Accoyo lines back to Accoyo lines to get full Accoyo genetics. Breeders have also crossed the high quality Accoyo alpacas to colored alpacas in hopes of breeding for higher quality colored animals.
